about Martin de Porres

about our school

San Martin De Porres School began under the direction of Father Ruben Delgado with a committee of Parishioners dedicated to establishing a school in the parish. The six members of the organizing committee and later the first members of the School Council were influential in beginning the school.  They conducted a study to determine if the school was feasible, determined the philosophy and mission of the school, they visited other schools, they organized work groups to make some of the furniture, and organized a fund raiser (Enchilada dinner plates) to have some money to begin.  Other upfront money came from parishoners through a second collection each month.  The building used for the school was built three years prior to the opening date with the idea that it might be used for a school at some future date.  The School Council along with the Superintendent and the Principal began to write grants to fund the other major needs of the school.  The office equipment, telephone and P.A. system, network wiring, and the playground equipment were all purchased with grants obtained by the Superintendent.  Through other Diocesan grants,  the school is able to have a part time counselor in the school, and began Catechesis of the Good Shepherd program, as well as, the Orff music program .  The library was funded by a Kenedy Fondation grant.  The initial computer lab was donated by Dominican Academy of Austin when it closed in the fall of 2002.  Last year a family made a large donation for science equipment and this year six keyboards were added to our music program with a donation.  Also this year the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd program was initiated in two more classrooms as a result of another grant.

A Parent-Teacher Club (PTC) was organized during the first school year with the function of promoting the school and raising money.  The group of officers planned and executed the first Fall Raffle and Spring Raffle/Auction.  These two fundraisers still make up a large portion of the budget for the school.  The local community has been very supportive in giving donations for these events.

During the 2001-2002 school year the School Council met the need for more space for the school by having a portable built on site.  In the fall of 2002 the 2nd/3rd grade combination class moved into the building  and this summer, 2004, another portable has been added to sustain our growth through this year and the next.  The School Council has already developed a master plan for a permanant addition to be adding to the existing building.

During the 2002-2003 school year the Principal and School Council members reached out to many members of the school community and local community to do a 5 year plan for the school.

Over the 6 years, we have seen a definate growth in the spiritual life of the school.  In 2003 the first students received the sacraments of first Reconciliation and first Eucharist.  Shortly thereafter, the students became alter servers.  Last year, the students were asked to be greeters and ushers at each Mass on Thursday.  The school continues to look for ways for the students to be involved in outreach programs.  This year the students organized a collection for a Church in Chennia, India which suffered greatly from the December Tsunami.

The dedication and support of the families of the students, the Parish members and the local community have had a great impact on the school during these six years of existance.
