library

The school has provided a library manager for four hours each day to meet the needs of the 125 students and 8 full time teachers.  The library itself is open throughout the school day and teachers may take their classes to the library at any time that it is free from scheduled library times.

Through a grant , the library has been equipped with an automated library system (Concourse) and a bar code reader, so all books are recorded on the system and inventoried each summer.  The program provides a search mechanism to find any books in the library.  Presently, there are approximately 4300 books in the library, mostly new books.  Many of the books are labeled as Accelerated Reader books along with the book reading level and the quizzes are available to the student.

Each class is scheduled into the library once a week, with part of the class period devoted to the developement of library skills according to a scope and sequence provided by Region I.

The library also contains a shelf of material for the teachers to use with the guidance program, art program, and writing program.  There are also magazines for the students and some for the teachers.  The local newspaper is also kept in the library.

The library manager is the person responsible for implementing the Accelerated Reader program with students from Kinder to 6th grade.  With the help of the teacher and the administrator goals are set for each grade level and points are assigned to be earned during each quarter.  At the end of the school year, students get tickets for their points to purchase objects in the Accelerated Reader "store".

Twice a year the library manager holds a book fair.  Students are brought to the library to choose two books that interest them and these are put aside for the parents to approve.  The library has made approximately $500 each semester and the money is used to purchas more books for the library.
